GREAT PEOPLE. Yesterday, 24 February 2018, FOLCO QUILICI died at the Orvieto hospital, Italy, at the age of 87. The GREAT ITALIAN DOCUMENTARIST, writer, naturalist and populariser was born in Ferrara on April 9, 1930, son of the painter Emma Buzzacchi and of the journalist Nello, who died in 1940 with the crew of Italo Balbo in the plane crash of Tobruk. As a true pioneer, Folco Quilici made “SESTO CONTINENTE” (SIXTH CONTINENT) in 1954, the first documentary in Italy with colour shots of life beneath the surface of the sea. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1971 for a documentary of the series “L’Italia vista dal cielo” (Italy seen from the sky), while for “OCEANO” (OCEAN) he received a Davide di Donatello.
